The Sacred Origin of River Ganga

Religious Significance of Gangotri Dham

Gangotri Dham is the spiritual source of the River Ganges. According to mythology, King Bhagirath’s penance brought the heavenly river to Earth to purify his ancestors. To control its force, Lord Shiva caught the river in his matted locks.
Here, the river is called Bhagirathi, which later merges with the Alaknanda River at Devprayag to form the holy Ganga. Pilgrims visit Gangotri to seek spiritual blessings and cleanse their souls.

Simple and Serene Himalayan Design

Temple Architecture of Gangotri Dham

The Gangotri Temple was built in the early 18th century by Gorkha general Amar Singh Thapa. Crafted from white granite, the temple features a simple and peaceful design that blends well with the natural Himalayan surroundings. During the winter months, heavy snowfall forces the temple to close. At that time, the idol of Goddess Ganga is moved to the nearby village of Mukhba, near Harsil, until the temple reopens in summer.
