Gangotri Dham is one of the four sacred sites of the Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand. Located at an altitude of 3,100 meters in the majestic Garhwal Himalayas, it sits beside the Bhagirathi River and is dedicated to Goddess Ganga, the embodiment of the holy River Ganges. The temple attracts thousands of pilgrims and nature lovers every year, offering a perfect mix of spiritual serenity and natural beauty.
Gangotri Dham is the spiritual source of the River Ganges. According to mythology, King Bhagirath’s penance brought the heavenly river to Earth to purify his ancestors. To control its force, Lord Shiva caught the river in his matted locks.
Here, the river is called Bhagirathi, which later merges with the Alaknanda River at Devprayag to form the holy Ganga. Pilgrims visit Gangotri to seek spiritual blessings and cleanse their souls.
OF Experience
Happy Clients
The Gangotri Temple was built in the early 18th century by Gorkha general Amar Singh Thapa. Crafted from white granite, the temple features a simple and peaceful design that blends well with the natural Himalayan surroundings. During the winter months, heavy snowfall forces the temple to close. At that time, the idol of Goddess Ganga is moved to the nearby village of Mukhba, near Harsil, until the temple reopens in summer.
Gangotri Dham is best visited between May to June and September to October, when the weather is clear and the roads are safe. This period offers the most comfortable and scenic experience. Avoid visiting during winter (November to April), as the temple remains closed due to heavy snowfall. Early booking is advised to avoid last-minute issues during peak pilgrimage months.
